Job Summary: Under the supervision of the Patron Services Librarian, the Patron Services Assistant supports the maintenance and delivery of library collections and provides excellent customer service to patrons of all ages. Qualified candidates must be friendly, enthusiastic, and motivated to work with a team to provide reliable service in an environment welcoming to all.
Essential Job Functions
- Works the Service Desk, providing basic customer service for all patrons, including checking items in and out, placing items on hold, handling cash and credit transactions, promoting library services and events, and providing informational and directional assistance.
- Assists with collection maintenance, including processing items, adjusting catalog records, conducting repairs, and retrieving items from the shelves.
- Prepares and processes materials for interlibrary delivery.
- Works to maintain patron and donor confidentiality, ensuring compliance with Library policy and state requirements.
- Works on special projects and other duties as assigned.
Supervision: Reports directly to the Patron Services Librarian.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Ability to work effectively with minimal supervision and manage priorities in a busy environment while maintaining exceptional customer service
- Patience and ability to work and communicate effectively with diverse populations, including children and adults of all ages
- Proficiency in desktop applications including MS Office (Familiarity with Sierra or other ILS a plus, but not required)
- Ability to address problems and find effective solutions, including asking for assistance from other library staff as needed
- Commitment to accuracy and attention to detail
- Familiarity with library services and procedures
- Ability to understand, interpret, and implement library policies, procedures, and rules
- Commitment to public service and the principles of intellectual freedom, racial equity, inclusion, and social justice
Education/Experience Requirements: High school diploma, or equivalent. LTA degree or library experience preferred. Prior experience working in customer service and/or libraries preferred.

- Ability to perform duties in a busy office environment subject to continuous interruptions and background noises.
- Must be able to carry up to 20 lbs. and push/pull a loaded book cart weighing up to 200 lbs.
- Must be able to bend and stretch to reach low and high shelves.
- Must be able to stand for up to 3 hours.
- Vision and hearing at or correctable to “normal ranges.”
Schedule, Compensation, & Benefits: Part-time, 10 hours per week on average, including evening and weekend hours. Additional hours may be assigned as needed to cover staff vacation and illness. Starting pay $18.50 per hour. This position is not eligible for benefits beyond paid sick time at a rate of 1 shift per month.
