Feeding the Hungry Along the Shoreline
The Shoreline Soup Kitchens and Pantries provides food and fellowship to those in need. They serve the Connecticut shoreline towns of Essex, Chester, Clinton, Madison, Old Saybrook, East Lyme, Lyme, Old Lyme, Killingworth, Westbrook and Deep River, and provide approximately 900,000 meals worth of food each year. Old Lyme Pantry operates Saturdays and they offer a Sunday brunch.
What They Do:
- Serve singles and families
- Home-style meals are served on Saturdays 9am-10am at the First Congressional Church
- Groceries distribution takes place on Saturdays 8:30 am – 11 am at the same location
- Fresh vegetables grown in our garden
- Frozen, microwaveable meals are prepared by our Heat-n-Eat kitchens
They are an interfaith ministry, with all locations by faith communities. Over 800 volunteers prepare meals, drive trucks and weed the garden. Every 2nd Tuesday at Grace Episcopal church, there is a volunteer orientation for 1.5 hours and sign ups are taken for the most pressing needs. Age 16 and younger must be accompanied by an adult. Food and cash donations are welcome at any time.
Old Lyme PGN Library is now working towards becoming a permanent donation site for SSKP. The most needed items are juice, low sodium soup, breakfast cereals and granola bars, canned fruit, high protein food in can such as :spam, tuna, beans and ravioli. Also personal care items such as shampoo, soap, hand and body lotion, deodorant. Trial size products of this nature are also welcome. For infants there is always a need for diapers and formula. To donate fresh food, it should be dropped off directly at the Old Lyme location.
